Pericles(c. 495-429 BC): One of the most influential leaders of Athens, best remembered for his promotion of the arts, literature and democracy. His “Funeral Oration” is one of the most famous speeches from antiquity, praising Athens’ democracy and its citizens who died for it, emphasising valour, public service, and the city’s superiority. He celebrated their sacrifice and Athenian ideals.
